Former Miss Venezuela Eva Ekvall has died at the age of 28 after losing her battle against breast cancer.
Eva Ekvall’s battle with cancer was closely followed by the people of Venezuela and a lot of eyes were teary upon her death.
According to the details provided by Eva Ekvall’s family, she died on Saturday at a hospital in Houston. She will be cremated in Houston on Monday and later a service will be held in Venezuela, once her remains reach her home country.
Eva Ekvall was crowned Miss Venezuela back in 2000 at the age of 17. She later went on to be crowned as the third runner-up in the Miss Universe pageant, which was held in Puerto Rice in 2001. After winning these prestigious titles, Eva Ekvall pursued her career in modeling. She also ventured into the field of acting and eventually became a television news anchor.
Ekvall was a woman of multiple skills and one of those skills also included writing. She was the author of a book by the name of "Fuera de Foco" ("Out of Focus"), which was all about her struggle with cancer. The book became quite popular in the Venezuelan market and it also included her images taken by photographer Roberto Mata.
When her book was launched, Eva Ekvall gave an interview to a newspaper in which she said, "I needed to send the message of the need for cancer prevention."
The cover of her book featured her with make-up and a shaved head. The book also included images of her undergoing chemotherapy.
"I hate to see photos in which I come out ugly," Eva Ekvall told El Nacional. "But you know what? Nobody ever said cancer is pretty or that I should look like Miss Venezuela when I have cancer."
Throughout her journey, her friends, family and fans greatly supported her. She included some of the messages that she used to receive from them in her book.
Eva Ekvall was married to radio producer John Fabio Bermudez. She had a two-year-old daughter from this marriage.
Eva Ekvall will always be remembered as a brave and beautiful woman, who fought bravely against this disease.
