Ralph MacDonald

He can be found playing on hundreds of songs and albums…sometimes without us ever realizing he was there.

Songwriter and percussionist Ralph MacDonald died Sunday at the age of 67. Reports say MacDonald, who was in Stamford, Connecticut; died after a long illness.

MacDonald is a first generation American, the son of Calypso performer “Macbeth the Great” – an immigrant from Trinidad. As a young lad, playing his father’s drum, MacDonald dreamed of a successful music career

The Harlem born musician got his musical start by playing in his father’s Calypso band. After spending 10 years as the percussionist for crooner and Calypso singer Harry Belafonte, MacDonald started a publishing company. The first big hit for the group was the MacDonald and Bill Salter penned “Where is the Love” – a duet by Roberta Flack and Donny Hathaway.

MacDonald had a second chart topping hit with “Just the Two of Us” sung by Bill Withers. The hit won Withers and MacDonald a Grammy Award. MacDonald also won a Grammy when his song “Calypso Breakdown” appeared on the “Saturday Night Fever” soundtrack. MacDonald lent his percussive skills to Jimmy Buffett’s Coral Reefer Band.

Over the course of his career, MacDonald worked with star like Harry Belafonte, Roberta Flack, Donny Hathaway, Bill Withers, James Taylor, Billy Joes, Bette Midler, Diana Ross, Paul Simon, Luther Vandross, Aretha Franklin, Amy Winehouse, Grover Washington Jr., and Jimmy Buffett.

MacDonald is survived by his wife Grace and children Nefra-Ann, Atiba, Anthony, and Giovanni.
