Storm, floods in south Philippines kill nearly 440

At least 436 dead and hundreds are still missing of tropical storm "Sendong" (international name: Washi), flash floods hits across Mindanao swamped Cagayan de Oro City, Iligan City, and parts of Zamboanga del Norte, Philippines.

Tropical storm "Sendong" slightly intensified as it traversed the Sulu Sea toward Palawan.

Most of the dead people were asleep Friday night when raging floodwaters tore through their homes from swollen rivers and cascaded from mountain slopes following the non-stop rain in the southern Mindanao region.

The search and rescue operations are still ongoing in the Western Mindanao area.

The Department of Social Welfare and Development has P23.95 million relief supplies and P5.36 million worth of standby funds are ready for immediate release to the affected areas.
