During the whole Cold War in the second half of the 20th century, Russia and the US battled each other everywhere else than on their own ground. The guerilla war in Afghanistan and the war between Iran and Iraq being two perfect examples. The reasons are probably multiple. The depression is arising steadily, especially in the seriously wounded US economy. The gas prices steeply rising causing almost tremendous anxiety in the US population and a rage for answerrs. There are a few ironies in all of this. The biggest of them all being the war on terror moving the US further away from a solution as the government is bleeding money in a race after the ghosts, sorry terrorists. This intense hunt has in many ways destroyed the availability of Middle Eastern oil. The expression shooting yourself in the foot comes to mind.
It is therefore not that unlikely that a sequential of the Cold War might actually become a reality. Sadly. The irony here is of course that this time the Russian economy is rising, and the US economy falling.
