"ESA stated that provided images show the existence of the liquid element. It did not rule out that glaciers buried beneath the surface of the red planet can be found."
Confirm the existence of large amounts of water under the surface of Mars, future manned missions could stock up on this planet.
Images, indicated the organization allow look closely at the mountain and see that almost all mountains are surrounded by "Lobar alluvial fans", which are morphologically very similar to the bulges covering glaciers on Earth.
"This fact suggests that perhaps there are also glaciers buried beneath the surface of Mars in this region," said the European Space Agency (ESA, for its acronym in English) on their website, where pointed out that this hypothesis was supported by the observations by the radar that travels on board the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter of the American NASA probe.
He added that observations by radar proved that the presence of such fans of alluvial - rounded structures that appear frequently on plateaus and mountains of the area - is almost always related to the existence of water in the solid state under the surface, "sometimes at only 20 meters of depth".
According to ESA, "the craters in the vicinity of Phlegra present marks indicating a recent glacial activity in the region".
Theories point out that the crests of the mountain system were formed when the oldest craters were filled with snow and, with the passage of time, it was compacting.
The European Agency explained that these mid-latitude glaciers originated at different times over the last few hundreds of millions of years, when the polar axis of Mars was very different from the current and therefore also were the weather conditions.
