Governors Of Rhode Island & Washington File Petition With DEA To Reclassify Marijuana

U.S. activists calling for the use of medical marijuana on Thursday received significant public support of two governors.

The Washington state governor Christine Gregoire, and the governor of Rhode Island, Lincoln Chafee, asked the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency, DEA reclassify marijuana to permit medical use.

The current classification of marijuana by the federal government as a level one drug means that doctors can not prescribe it, and place the laws of 16 states that have legalized marijuana for medical purposes (including Washington and Rhode Island) in conflict with federal standards.
