Yesterday afternoon, the African nation of Nigeria passed a bill that bans same sex marriages within the country. The bill is called the Same Sex Marriage Bill. The bill is split up into five different sections. Here is a quick recap of all five sections.
Section 1: Any marriage contract or civil union of the same sex within the country of Nigeria is now viewed as being invalid. Also, the marriage contract or civil union of the same sex that was given by another country is also invalid within Nigeria. That means that all same sex contracts are null and void within the borders of Nigeria.
Section 2: This section is a reiteration of the second half of section one in which a marriage or a civil union certificate from another country is void within Nigeria.
Section 3: The only marriages that viewed as being valid within Nigeria are between a man and a woman.
Section 4: Gay clubs are now prohibited within Nigeria. Any public show of same sex relations are also banned within their borders.
Section 5: Anyone within Nigeria that violates the first four sections could be sentenced up to ten years imprisonment.
Of course, Western nations all over the world have now threatened to place economic sanctions upon Nigeria if this law was passed. However, these sanctions would not hurt the Nigerian economy because they are the #1 oil producer in Africa. Plus, their biggest buyer is China, a country in which its government really doesn't care about human rights. Go to jail if you're gay.
