Penn State students and supporters gather for a large candlelight vigil for victims of child abuse

11.26.11]----The Penn State child sex abuse scandal is getting worse as the days and weeks go by. Jerry Sandusky's latest accusers are allegedly 2 boys under the age of 18 and one of them is shockingly reported to be his 5-year-old grandson.

According to ABC News, the wife of one of Sandusky's 5 adopted sons has filed a complaint with Pennsylvania Children and Youth Services about the sexual abuse she says happened to her young son at the hands of his grandfather Sandusky.

Defense lawyer Joseph Amendola has refuted the charges, claiming it was a divorce ploy.

Sandusky's daughter-in-law has filed for divorce from his son and has also reportedly filed for a court order banning Jerry Sandusky from all contact with his grandchildren.

The 67-year-old Penn State ex-assistant coach was arrested on October 5, charged with 40 counts of sexual child abuse of 8 boys over 15 years from 1994 to 2009.

These latest allegations, which reportedly happened before Sandusky was arrested but filed after the grand jury convened in March, are the first of current minor children. All the other accusers are now adults.

Sandusky is free on $100,000 bail.

11.5.11(Penn) Former Penn State University coach, Jerry Sandusky was arrested on Saturday for allegedly sexually abusing 8 boys over a period of years, reported CNN.

The 67-year-old Sandusky, who worked at the university for decades, was arraigned on 40 criminal counts including indecent assault, unlawful contact with a minor, deviant sexual intercourse, corruption of minors, endangering the welfare of a child among others. Oral and anal sex are also part of the allegations as well as shower incidents.

These allegations and arrest are shocking for Sandusky was well-respected for his philanthropic endeavors with young people. After he retired in 1999, he worked full-time at the non-profit organisation he started in 1977 called Second Mile, where he worked with at-risk youths.

During his coaching years, he was credited with producing top quality linebackers for the University.

Sandusky lawyer Joe Amendola reportedly said his client continues to maintain his innocence but his arraignment is set for next Wednesday. He was released on $100,000 bail.

The Attorney General Linda Kelly however, reportedly describes Sandusky as a "sexual predator" who abused his power to prey on vulnerable young boys.

One of the victims may reportedly be as young as 11 or 13 and court documents allegedly show that a janitor caught Sandusky with the boy pinned up against the wall, performing oral sex on him in 2000. Other charges inxlude him with forcing boys in showers to perform sex acts, taking them on trips and showering them with gifts.

Some of his alleged 8 victims are now grown men for the abuse spanned 1994-2009. Their names have not been released to protect their privacy.

Two university officials--the school's athletic director and an administrator are also charged with knowing about the abuse and covering it up. Both men's lawyers say their clients are innocent. 57 year old Tim Curley and 62 year old Gary Schultz will reportedly turn themselves in to authorities on Monday.

Head coach Joe Paterno has not been charged or accused of having any knowledge of the prolonged abuse but was fired along with president Graham Spanier.

You're welcome---but it's business as usual--games are being played and they continue to real in the money from football--the very reason I think they ignored this perversion in their midst for so long.

A few days after news of the tragedy broke, the media reported, “The school considered cancelling the [Nebraska] game but decided it would be unfair to players and fans, board member Linda Strumpf told Reuters.”

Unfortunately, the bigger point is being missed. Coaches and administrators need to be better deterred from covering for sports programs when the sexual innocence of children is at risk. Firings and jail time are not enough. Shutting down such sports programs adds a lot. No one wants to be responsible for such an outcome. Accordingly, the Penn State football program needs to be shut down for at least the same number of years that the allegations of sexual misconduct were covered up.

Over the years, a number of collegiate basketball and football programs have been shut down for multiple years for various combinations of academic fraud, point shaving scandals, and recruiting violations. Those situations pale in comparison to what happened with the Penn State football program.
