San Francisco – Brandon Wilson, 33, hung himself in his death row prison cell, Thursday. Wilson was convicted of killing a 9-year-old boy in 1998. Wilson was serving time at San Quentin State Prison.
It is believed that Wilson committed suicide. He was the sole occupant of the cell in the San Quentin Prison.
Wilson was sentenced to death in 1999 for the brutal murder of Matthew Cecchi. Cecchi and Wilson met in a park restroom in Oceanside, California in 1998.
Since California reinstated capital punishment in 1978, nineteen suicides have occurred on death row. Wilson is the latest statistic to be added to the Department of Corrections data book. Presently, there are 719 inmates on California’s death row.
More inmates have died from self-inflicted means than have been executed by the state. Thirteen prisoners have been subject to capital punishment under California law since 1978.
