The leaders of Kuwait held an emergency meeting, after several thousand protesters briefly occupied the parliament building during the Wednesday night.

The extraordinary session of the Cabinet chaired by the ruling emir Sheikh Nasser Mohammad Al-Ahmad Al Sabah, who has the power to dissolve the assembly and dismiss all ministers.

The protests were the largest so far in a long campaign for the resignation of the sheikh, who holds the post of prime minister.

The rejection of the government has grown due to the accumulation of charges of corruption against members of parliament, but until now Kuwait has not been the scene of riots like those seen elsewhere in the Arab world.
