Campaign contributions of $201,783.64 were given to the election campaign of Gov. Tom Corbett from The Second Mile. Jerry Sandusky, alleged multi-child sex offender, is the co-founder of The Second Mile. Corbett is now having the charity investigated.

Corbett told the Wall Street Journal; “I need to know what (the charity’s )board members knew.” He doesn’t need to look far. Much of the Second Mile’s board members are contributors to Corbett’s campaign.

Corbett has been in association with the Second Mile for years. There are no allegations that the Governor had any knowledge of Sandusky’s alleged abuse of the children at the center. The question - how large is the connection between the governor and the charity?

Corbett approved a $3 million state grant for the new facility at the Second Mile . That grant is temporarily on hold as the charity is investigated.

Lance Shaner, Chairman of the Shaner Companies and CEO of Shaner Hotels served on the Second Mile board from 1998 – 2006. His donation to the Corbett campaign was $155,550. The tenure of his service to the charity is under investigation. This time period is the most crucial in the Sandusky sex scandal.

Governor Corbett’s latest views on the Penn State’s sex scandal and the Second Mile; “if you talk to people who have worked with Second Mile, it has done great work,” he said. “And if it should cease to exist, I am hopeful that other organizations will pick up the work that they did. We need to reach out to these children. We need to give them guidance.”
