A telephone bidder has bought the rare ‘Sun-Drop’ yellow diamond at an auction in Sotheby’s, Geneva, for a cool $10.9 million, globalpost said.
Sotheby's auctioneer David Bennett said it was a record sale for a yellow diamond but "it was exactly within our expectation for this spectacular stone."
Gemologists rated the diamond as "fancy vivid yellow," the highest color grading for the diamonds caused by “nitrogen impurities trapped within carbon molecules and hardened over the course of millions of years."
The pear-shaped gem was discovered in South Africa last year.
It was one of the largest to appear in the auction in dazzling 110.3 carat.
