Better divorce than giving dowry, Bangladesh bride says

A Bangladesh bride has decided that she would rather take a divorce than offering a dowry to her husband.

Farzana Yasmin decided to divorce her husband immediately after she got married because her husband insisted on dowry.

In the conservative, Islamic society in Bangladesh, giving a huge dowry is asked for by the bridegroom or his relatives.

Although giving or taking dowry is made a punishable offence in the country, the practice is widely prevalent.

‘The dowry has become a cancer in our society', the holder of a Master's degree said.

She refused to go with her husband. On the wedding day itself, Farzana said she would now file for divorce.
