The stars and professional dancers have reached the semi finals on “Dancing with the Stars”. The final four will perform two separate dances and a relay dance for fan votes and (hopefully) good marks from the judges.
Last week JR Martinez and his partner Karina Smirnoff became the first couple to score a perfect 30 for a dance. And the pair didn’t do it just once, they scored 30 points on both of their dances for a perfect night. Will JR repeat his performance of a perfect routine this week or will Rob, Ricki, or Hope steal the top spot one week short of the finals?
Up first was Hope and Maks with the first Paso Doble of the night. Head judge Lenn Goodman said the dance had attitude and aggression but was lost control and finesse. Bruno said Hope was unchained and untamed like a raging torrent of anger but the performance lacked artistry. Carrie Ann said that Hope nailed the character but felt the hold was a little out of sync; adding that the grace and fluidity suffered. While waiting for their scores Hope said that dancers are truly athletes. Hope and Maks scored 21 points for their Paso Doble.
After a perfect week JR said the bar had been raised even higher this week. During rehearsals JR twisted his ankle and twisted it again during his dance. Dressed as Zorro, JR danced to the theme from the “Mask of Zorro”. Bruno said that he could feel the thrill and excitement of the dance, the role play was great, but JR’s posture was off. Carrie Ann game JR credit for attacking the dance with his injured ankle but agreed with Bruno that JR’s posture was lacking. Len noted that the dance didn’t suit JR and said it was more zero than Zorro. JR and Karina scored 23 points for their Paso Doble.
Rob and Cheryl performed a party dance Samba that started out on a float. Carrie Ann asked Rob, “ who are you? What was that?” She thought the float was a strange beginning but once the dance began…holy cow; adding the dance was amazing and Rob had musicality, performed a fluid dance, and was fantastic. Len said that when the float came out he thought oh no, but once the dance began he said oh yes. Bruno said Rob exceeded all expectations and turned a handicap into an assest. Rob and Cheryl earned their highest score of the season with 28 points that included a 10 from Carrie Ann.
Ricke and Derek also performed a Samba but without the float and parade. Len said the performance was fabulous; and added that Ricki just took a giant step toward the finals. Bruno said Ricki was sizzling hot, bright, and brilliant from the beginning. Carrie Ann said the dance was fabulous; noting that the lowered shoulders made all the difference. Ricki and Derek scored their first perfect score of the competition with 30 points.
Hope and Maks – 21
JR and Karina – 23
Rob and Cheryl – 28
Ricki and Derek – 30
Round two of the dances all four couples will perform the Argentine Tango. This time the dances will include lifts. But before the contestants take to the dance floor, some of the pros perform an Argentine Tango of their own.
Hope began her Argentine Tango sitting on the judge’s table. Len said the performance was far better than their Paso Doble and had a lot of content. Bruno also said it was a much better performance with more control and Hope looked like she was into Maks. Carrie Ann said the dance had more fluidity and had some ambitious lifts. Hope and Maks scored 24 points for their Argentine Tango.
Despite an injured ankle, Bruno said that JR was in Latin lover mode during his Argentine Tango; adding that JR was strong fearless, and did an incredible job with his lifts. Carrie Ann said it was like a true fire burning between JR and Karina; and commended JR on his lifts. Len said the dance had mood and intensity; adding that he was transported to the back streets of Buenos Aires. JR and Karina scored 27 points for their Argentine Tango.
Rob and Cheryl began their Argentine Tango behind a curtain. Carrie Ann said there is no way to fake good dancing and Rob did a good job with passion and power. Len said it wasn’t where you start but where you finish and Rob is finishing strong. Bruno said Rob is looking like a leading man; in control and looking great. Rob and Cheryl scored 27 points for their Argentine Tango.
Len said Ricki and Derek’s Argentine Tango was full of contrast (static blocked out the rest of his comments). Bruno was transported into the underworld of Buenos Aires; adding that the mood of the dance was spot on and the dancing was fearless. Carrie Ann said Ricki is developing her core strength and her performances have pop and shine. Ricki and Derek scored 29 points for their Argentine Tango.
Hope and Maks – 24
JR and Karina – 27
Rob and Cheryl – 27
Ricki and Derek – 29
The third round of dances was a Cha Cha relay where the couples pulled numbers from a mirror ball bowl to determine performance order. Dancing to Enrique Iglesias, Ricki and Derek took to the dance floor first, they were followed by Hope and Maks, then JR and Karina, and bringing up the end was Rob and Cheryl. The first place couple will receive 10 points and the last place couple receives only four points. Len said the whole night was like going out to a beautiful meal. Bruno said everybody delivered a fantastic show. Carrie Ann said it was fantastic to see each of the couples one right after the other; adding that it was a surprise and didn’t go as expected.
Hope and Maks – 4
JR and Karina – 6
Ricki and Derek – 8
Rob and Cheryl – 10
Total scores for the semi finals…
Hope and Maks – 21 + 24 = 45 + 4 = 49
JR and Karina – 23 + 27 = 50 + 6 = 56
Rob and Cheryl – 28 + 27 = 55 + 10 = 65
Ricki and Derek – 30 + 29 = 59 + 8 = 67
On the results show the three finalists will be revealed and The Muppets visit the ball room.
