Angela Merkel calls for clarification of the political future of Italy

German Chancellor called on Italy to clarify its political situation urgently, after Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi announced his upcoming resignation.

"It is important for Italy to regain credibility and I think it is on track, but time is short. Urgently take forward adjustment plans and clarify the issue of political leadership," said the president told reporters after a meeting with President Romania, Traian Basescu.

In addition, the Chancellor reiterated the importance of unity of the 27 EU members, but for now the priority is to solve the debt crisis in the Eurozone.
