The strongest earthquake in the history of Oklahoma struck on Saturday night around 11 p.m. in the Kansas City. The magnitude of the tremor was reported to be 5.6 and it was felt in the areas of Texas, Wisconsin and Illinois as well. No serious damage was reported after the shock, but it was strong enough to bring cracks in the walls in some buildings and also things in stores fell off from the shelves. There were no casualties from the earthquake except for one person who got injured while running out of his house.
According to the residents of the area, the earthquake trembling continued for around 30 seconds and a weak thunder-like voice was also heard. People got scared by the shaking and moved out of their houses. Trembling of lesser intensity was felt in the morning as well on the same day. The magnitude of that tremor was reported to be 4.7. The region has been getting these minor shocks for the past two years, but no serious damage has been observed up till now.
The seismic monitoring agency identified the center of the earthquake to be approximately 44 miles east-northeast of the Oklahoma City. The disaster management staff in the city was alert to handle any serious situation, but no emergency was reported to them.
The earlier shocks were felt at 2:12 a.m., 2:27 a.m. and then 2:44 a.m. on Saturday. The first one had its epicenter at a 6 miles distance north of Prague in Lincoln County. It was in the rolling hills located about 50 miles in the east of Oklahoma City. The second aftershock had a magnitude of 3.4, whereas the third shock was lighter - 2.7 magnitudes.
The quakes are not common in that region. The people called the emergency department after the quake and told them what they felt. The experts said that it was a shallow quake, around 3 miles deep, and occurred over an identified fault line.
The last shaking occurred at night, when the Oklahoma State University in Stillwater had its stadium full of football lovers. Within minutes of the end of the game, the stadium started to tremble. The players as well as other people around were shocked and could not figure out what was happening for a few moments.
