Melting Glacier - Ice Breaking off

A huge crack is seen forming in the Antarctica – the observation has been made by NASA on 14th of October 2011 when it was mapping the region of the Pine Island glacier. This PIG is known as the weak underbelly of the Antarctica and is thinning with every passing day.

The crack extends to a length of roughly 30 Km and is widening at the rate of about 2 meters every day – it is the size of New York and is expected to break away and drift into the ocean by late 2011 or early 2012.

NASA is keeping a close watch in the developments and has assured that this is not due to global warming but is a natural phenomenon that is seen once in a decade.
