James Fromayan, the director of Liberia's electoral commission, resigned his post on Sunday, just days before the country celebrates the second round of presidential elections.

Fromayan said he was stepping aside "to make room for peace."

"I do not want to be the obstacle to the second round," he added.

Fromayan had been accused of not being impartial by the main opposition party (Congress for Democratic Change), which claimed that the first round of the elections had been fraudulent and full of irregularities.

The nominee of the opposition party, Winston Tubman, will face the current president, Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf in the second round on 8 November.
