Given the abundance of Trekkies hooked to computer screens, it was inevitable: Star Trek Online is set to be the next massively multiplayer online gaming experience.

The development of the virtual world based on the science fiction franchise is being handled by Cryptic Studios. Players can commence their virtual voyage as the captain of a small Starfleet. They then proceed to customize characters either as recognized Star Trek species or as brand new races. Exploration and scientific discovery remain central to the experience.

Game designers describe it as a "galactic-wide" game. They expect users to beam down to planets and experience infinite varieties of adventures. Debut footage from the game will be shown at the Star Trek Convention coming up in Las Vegas
