Last Thursday, October 20, 2011, a medical student from the University of Sto. Tomas died in a skydiving accident in Ormoc City. The student was just 24 years old.
The student was Loui Raymond Pestaño. He was with the Cebu Parachute Club when the accident happened. According to reports and eye witness accounts, Pestaño’s parachute didn’t open when he jumped out of a Cessna plane. He jumped out together with his instructor who was only known as Gary. Pestaño landed on a rice paddy which was meters away from the airport tarmac. He was rushed to the Ormoc Sugarcane Planters Association-Farmers Medical Center. He was pronounced dead when he arrived there.
The group of skydivers were training in Ormoc after they did an exhibition during the 64th Charter Day celebration of Ormoc City. Pestaño was with another student who did not push through the jump after the briefing. All the skydivers of the Cebu Parachute Club landed safely. Pestaño’s father, Orlando witnessed the death of his son and will have the parachute malfunction investigated.
