Former Pakistan Peoples Party Chairperson and mother of Shaheed, Begum Nusrat Bhutto has passed away on Sunday at a Dubai hospital after protracted illness. Her son-in-law President Asif Ali Zardari reached Dubai leaving his Jordon trip incomplete. Arrangements are being finalized to shift her body to Ghari Khuda Baksh where she would be laid to rest.
Born on March 23, 1929 Begum Nusrat Bhutto was an Iranian-Pakistani who was the former First Lady of Pakistan and widow of former Prime Minister of Pakistan. After assassination of her husband Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto, she became chairperson of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) in 1979. She comes from a wealthy Hariri Esfahani family in Esfahan and said to be of Kurdish descent. Nusrat's father was a wealthy Iranian businessman who settled in Karachi, Pakistan.
Nusrat met Zulfikar Ali Bhutto in Karachi where they got married on September 8, 1951. She was Zulfikar Ali Bhutto's second wife, and they had four children together, three of whom she has outlived. She lived the last few years of her life with her daughter's family in Dubai and suffered from the combined effects of a stroke and Alzheimer's Diseases.
The body of Begum Nusrat Bhutto will be buried at Ghari Khuda Baksh beside the graves of Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto, Murtaza Bhutto, Shahnawaz bhutto on Monday. Presidential spokespersonsaid. Her only surviving child Sanam Bhutto and grandchildren Bilawal, Bakhtawar and Aseefa Bhutto Zardari, presently in the UK, are expected to arrive in Dubai to accompany the dead body on its long journey to its final resting place.
President Asif Ali Zardari is already in Dubai. AJK President Sardar Muhammad Yaqoob Khan, Prime Minister Ch. Abdul Majeed, Senior Minister Ch. Muhammad Yaseen, Information Minister Syed Bazil Ali Naqvi have expressed their grief and shock over the death of Begum Nusrat Bhutto, mother of Shaheed Benazir Bhutto. In their separate condolence messages, they paid rich tributes to Begum Nusrat Bhutto for her services to the people of Pakistan and for restoration of democracy in the country.
They particularly eulogize the role of Begum Nusrat Bhutto during the MRD Movement when her husband Zulifqar Ali Bhutto was hanged, son killed and she along with her daughter Shaheed Benazir Bhutto subjected to various kinds of trials and tribulations including imprisonments and exiles. They prayed to Almighty Allah to rest the departed soul in eternal peace and grant courage to the bereaved family, her supporters and followers to bear this loss with fortitude.
