Thiago Motta's first half goal proved enough for Inter to earn their first home win, beating Chievo 1-0.

The Nerazzurri got back on their feet in the Champions League, but were coming off two consecutive Serie A defeats that left them in the relegation zone. Diego Forlan, Andrea Ranocchia, Philippe Coutinho, Walter Samuel, Andrea Poli and Emiliano Viviano were on the injury list. Chievo had a reputation as giant-killers and had just held leaders Juventus to a stalemate, but Gennaro Sardo was ruled out for a month.

The Flying Donkeys conquered San Siro in December 2001, but followed that first visit with two draws and six defeats - the last five on the trot.

It took 19 minutes for the first shot on target, a Mauro Zarate effort that was easy pickings for Stefano Sorrentino.

Wesley Sneijder unleashed a snapshot from outside the box that skimmed the near post. Zarate pulled back from the by-line for Esteban Cambiasso, who was just a little too late to tap in.

Sneijder curled a free kick over the defensive wall and towards the near top corner, but Sorrentino flew to palm it away with a fantastic save. However, from the resulting corner kick Thiago Motta got the free header from nine yards that flew under the bar.

Giampaolo Pazzini sprung the offside trap from a Sneijder ball over the top, but over-hit the lob and it landed on the roof of the net.

Sorrentino palmed away the deflected Zarate effort. Straight after the restart, Alberto Paloschi failed to make the most of a dreadful Julio Cesar clearance, as he tried to thump it rather than lob.

Douglas Maicon drilled wide with a solo effort, one of several attempts that were off target from the Brazilian full-back.

At the 72nd minute Maicon's right-foot screamer from the edge of the box arrowed on to the crossbar and Cambiasso turned the rebound wide on the volley.

Substitute Luc Castaignos was completely unmarked on the edge of the box only to aim a meek effort straight at the goalkeeper. Davide Moscardelli skipped past Yuto Nagatomo with some very cheeky footwork, but double marking blocked his pull-back.

Moments later Moscardelli unleashed a curling and viciously dipping strike from outside the area that Julio Cesar flew to fingertip over the bar.

Inter: Julio Cesar; Maicon, Lucio, Chivu, Nagatomo; Zanetti, Cambiasso, Thiago Motta; Sneijder (Stankovic 67); Pazzini (Castaignos 79), Zarate (Obi 90)
