A security guard at Manila's Ninoy Aquino International airport

Skooter reporting 10/23/11

Oh my goodness, what a horrible and very embarrassing report? Did you know that the Ninoy Aquino International Airport's Terminal 1 was ranked as the world's worst? Sound unbelievable or is it believable? The unsavory title was given by an online budget travel guide, www.sleepinginairports.net, based on reviews from its readers.

How in the world Manila's airport was the world's worst? The said website claimed that passenger complaint of mobile phones and jewellery getting lost at the security checks, shops sold tampered water bottles, passengers has to endure dirty toilets and ceilings collapsing giving further damaged to the airport's reputation.

Well, there was a quick reaction to the ranking, Transport Secretary Manuel Roxas pledged Wednesday that the government would work harder to improve the 30-year-old facility. In fact there is already a plan to move the main airport out of Manila to an old US airforce base where Diosdado Macapagal International Airport is located but the government has not set a timetable for this.

Meantime, Manila airport general manager Jose Angel Honrado told the media that his staff would accept the dubious title as a challenge, but insisted some of the harshest criticism was unfair and out of date. Toilets have been repaired and staff accused of extorting from passengers had been fired and charge in court.
