
Saliy Ashokamala great love story is one of the most significant incidents in Sri Lankan history. It is one true example which shows that love is second to none. One of the main characters of the story Saliya was born to a queen and his father was a mighty King in Sri Lankan history (Dutugemunu 2nd century B.C). The story had been true story according to various historical factors including Mahawamsa (great chronicle) and Chulawamsa.Prince Saliya was the only son of king Dutugemunu, the most powerful and legendary king of Sri Lanka. He was an intelligent Prince and conducted many meritorious deeds and Prince Saliya was the heir to the throne of the country after his father.Once in Ranmasu Uyana (Royal pleasure garden) besides Tissawewa in Anuradhapura his eyes met a beautiful damsel on an Asoka tree, picking the flowers and he fell in love with her at the first sight. Unfortunately she was born to a lower cast family while the prince was belongs to a high cast family; hence the prince is not allow to get married to her. It was the time, which the cast system was playing a prominent role in the society. The law was so strict on the matter that the death for both was the most possible punishment. But even then the hearts were still hearts and they knew next to nothing about the law. Their bond was so close and the thinnest thought of the law could not sneak in between them.The news about the secret love had wings of Saliya’s fame and soon the story found its way to the great king. King summoned the Prince and prince was told that he would not be able to become the King, if he continues his love affair with Ashokamala. Prince Saliya’s love for Ashokamala was greater than his desire for the kingdom. Against the wishes of the country, he married Ashokamala without any regard to the throne.The king was furious and he banished Prince Saliya from Anuradhapura. The Crown Prince Saliya lost the throne, fame and the family. But he was not the least worried because he had been enthroned in the heart of Ashokamala. They have chosen Tantirimale (Eastern part of the country) for their kingdom of love.Mahawamsa says “…….” (Mahawamsa – chapter 33)
