Bernie Madoff’s daughter-in-law, Stephanie Madoff Mack, has published a book in which she gives an account of her life in one of New York’s most powerful families.
In the book called “The End of Normal: A Wife’s Anguish, A Widow’s New Life”, Stephanie Madoff says she holds Bernie Madoff personally responsible for the death of her husband, Mark Madoff, who committed suicide after his father was exposed in a notorious Wall Street fraud.
"I hold him fully responsible for killing my husband," Stephanie Madoff said in a "20/20" interview that will air on Friday in the US. "I'd spit in his face [if I ever saw Madoff again]," she added as she promoted her book about the Madoff family scandal.
Stephanie is the first member of the Madoff family to have spoken out publically about the $50 billion Ponzi disastrous scheme that surfaced in 2008. Her book also reveals details about a jailhouse letter she received from Bernie Madoff after his son’s death.
Bernie Madoff’s son, Mark, committed suicide last December on the second anniversary of his father’s arrest. Mark reportedly took his life by hanging himself at the couple's $6 million apartment in New York's SoHo neighborhood, while their toddler son was asleep in an adjoining room.
In the book released October 20, Stephanie Madoff Mack claims that although Mark worked for his father, he had no knowledge of his father’s Ponzi fraud. Stephanie said that her husband’s suicide was driven by the embarrassment and shame of finding out about the disgraced scheme.
Mark Madoff and his brother, Andrew, 45, were responsible for alerting authorities to their father's deceptive financial scheme in December 2008. She said her late husband relentlessly followed news coverage about his father and failed in a 2009 suicide attempt, leaving a note saying his life was “destroyed” and telling his dad: “F**k you.”
In March 2009, Bernie Madoff was sentenced to 150 years in prison. "I have left a legacy of shame, as some of my victims have pointed out, to my family and my grandchildren. This is something I will live in for the rest of my life. I'm sorry," he said after his conviction.
Bernie Madoff is currently serving his sentence at a federal facility in North Carolina.
Stephanie Madoff’s will be making an appearance next week on “Good Morning America”. Stephanie married Mark Madoff in 2003. The handsome couple was a prominent fixture on the New York social scene and had two children together. Mark Madoff also had two children from his first marriage.
