The residents heaved a sigh of relief when the last of the exotic animals were finally shot dead. These 48 animals had escaped from a private zoo in Zanesville where the owner used to keep them in cages. But – the cages were left open and Terry Thompson, the owner of the 73-acre Muskingum County Animal Farm was dead. Therefore, with no one to stop them, the animals wandered onto to the highway and the neighboring human settlements.
Only 6 animals could be located and rescued before nightfall and sent to the Columbus Zoo– these were 3 leopards, 2 monkeys and one grizzly bear. The shoot-to-kill orders had to be issued because of the approaching nightfall – the 48 animals killed were 17 lions, 18 Bengal tigers, 6 black bears, 3 mountain lions, 2 grizzly bears, one wolf, and one baboon.
