Hyderabad, Oct.17: As expected the Telangana Rashtra Samiti, which is spearheading the cause for a separate Telangana state, has comfortably wrested the Banswada Assembly seat in Nizamabad district, in the by-election held on October 13.
The TRS candidate Mr. Pocharam Srinivas Reddy defeated the Congress nominee Mr. Srinivas Goud by a margin of 49,889 votes. While the TRS candidate secured 83,245 votes out of a total of 1,22,872 votes polled, the Congress nominee could get 33,356 votes and thus managed to save his deposit.
It might be mentioned that Mr. Pocharma Srinivas Reddy was elected from Banswada Assembly constituency in 2009 elections as a TDP candidate with a majority of 26,103 votes against the Congress nominee Mr. B. Govardhan in a eight cornered contest.
However being a staunch protagonist of a separate Telangana state, he differed with Mr. N. Chandrababu Naidu for his failure to take a clear stand on the issue and quit from the Assembly as well as the party. This necessitated the by-election.
Mr. Srinivas Reddy joined the TRS and contested the by-poll as a candidate of the pink brigade. The TDP and BJP did not enter the fray in the by-election unlike in 2009. Though many Congress leaders, especially from the district, were against the party fielding a candidate, the Chief Minister and the APCC President felt that being a ruling party in the state it cannot stay away from a contest. Thus the Congress fielded Mr. Srinivas Goud and had to face an imminent defeat.
The Banswada poll result clearly indicates the strong sentiment among the people of the area in favour of separate Telangana state formation.
