(Check It Out! Pictures!) British IndyCar champion driverdies after suffering multiple severe injuries at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway' horrific multi-car crash on October 16, 2011.
The 33-year-old English driver was involved in a multi-car accident where at least two cars become airborne and turning upside down. According to report, the car crash started in front of Wheldon and was catapulted over another racer and hurled into fencing and erupted in flames on Lap 12.
After Wheldon was flown by helicopter to University Medical Center, two hours later he was announced dead.
IndyCar Series CEO Randy Bernard stated:
"IndyCar is very sad to announce that Dan Wheldon has passed away from unsurvivable injuries."
"Our thoughts and prayers are with his family today. IndyCar, its drivers and owners have decided to end the race. In honor of Dan Wheldon, the drivers have decided to do a five-lap salute."
