Toyota will return to the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 2012 as a manufacturer in its own right, with a prototype powered by a gasoline hybrid, said Friday the Automobile Club de l'Ouest (ACO), organizer of the celebrated endurance race car.

Thirteen years after the last official participation of Toyota at Le Mans, the engine was designed in Japan by the parent, and the frame prepared in great secrecy, by the structure of Toyota Motorsport GmbH, based in Cologne (Germany) , who was on standby since the cessation of activities of Toyota F1.

Toyota was already indirectly endurance this season in Le Mans Intercontinental Cup (ILMC) and Le Mans Series (LMS) in Europe, with engines installed in Lola coupes of the Rebellion Swiss team in the premier class (LMP1) which will be incurred in 2012, future prototypes of large Japanese manufacturer.

The Japanese also participate in "few rounds" of the new World Championship Endurance (WEC) which schedule should be released during November, and will be opposed to Peugeot and Audi, the main leaders of the 24 hours since the beginning of the 21st century .
