Five motorists dead in pile-up involving 51 cars in Chile

Authorities say at least four people have died and other 20 injured after 51 vehicles pile-up on the highway linking this Chile capital with its busiest seaport. The accident was caused in Casablanca, a city in Valparaiso province some 80 km from Santiago.

The cause of accident is said due to low visibility created by fog and burning of nearby cropland. Buses, trucks and private cars were collided. Police say the accident started when one small vehicle stopped suddenly due to lack of visibility in the dense morning fog that caused other vehicle to strike behind it.

An official Guillermo de la Maza said that 51 vehicles collided including 23 trucks and 11 buses. There were some private cars too, he added.

Jaime Manalich, health minister said that it’s too early to talk about deaths. Two helicopters as well as numerous ambulances responded, he added.

More deaths are expected. Investigation and search is still underway.
