Ukraine ex-PM Tymoshenko jailed to 7 years

Former Ukrainian prime minister Yulia Tymoshenko sentenced to jail for seven years by the court on Tuesday. She found guilty in natural gas import contract with Moscow in 2009, and she exceeded her power. She is also ex-political leader of Ukraine.

In his ruling Judge said, Yulia Tymoshenko will have to also pay back 186 million dollars lost by the state gas company in connection with the deal.

The police found stood outside the court and thousands of supporters were gathered out of court and clashed with security forces in which some minor injured and some arrested.

Ex Prime Minister Tymoshenko said the charges were politically motivated. She vowed to appeal against her sentence and fight for Ukraine "till her last breath.

According to European Union, it was disappointed with the verdict.

Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, who signed the deal with Mrs Tymoshenko, said he did not understand why she had been jailed.

"It is dangerous and counter-productive to cast the entire package of agreements into doubt," Mr Putin was quoted as saying by Reuters news agency.
