Four males were arrested and charged by police after an incidence of dispute in an Amish settlement.

A 74 year old Amish male was set upon in his own home and the antagonists chopped off his beard with a pair of scissors.

Police believe it occurred because of a family feud between 18 families which has been going on for four years, Details of the reason for the feud have not been released by the police, The action itself however was to bring humiliation on the victim.

As soon as an Amish male marries he grows a beard. The woman ceases cutting her hair. The former an unbroken tradition until recently. There have been previous actions of this nature in which the police were not involved.

In the case of the 74 year old he made a complaint, and the four suspects have been charged with kidnapping and burglary.

One Amish male told the police he would rather die than have his beard cut.

It is a well known fact that the Amish live simple lives; dress in plain clothes, reject what most of us regard as essential viz. Electricity, cars and television.

Scissors which were involved in the alleged assault are quite obviously acceptable items of equipment.

The Amish originally emerged in Switzerland as a schism from orthodoxy in 1693 and led by Jacobg Ammann. They still communicate in their original native tongue known as - Pennysylvanian German and also known as Pennysylvanian Dutch.

It is a pity that conflict in whatever from is attributable in so many cases toreligious faihs and creeds.
