A child’s first visit to the beach.

“Is this a desert ? ”

The child had seen the sand and imagined pictures

seen in books on school shelves.

Exotic scenes of sand and strongly bright, striped clothing.

There were a number of striped items, inhabited by humans at the scene.

“Well kind of, but deserts are not beside the sea.

They are in countries where there is no water .”

“Will I see a camel ? ” Still thinking of the colourful illustrations.

“Well, they have been known to come here for a drink of water. “

Not wanting to disturb the child’s romantic illusions.

Quiet.

“If I could swim, and swam out as far as I could over there,”

finger pointed to the horizon,

“Would I reach Mars ? Or the moon? “

“Probably Denmark or Norway.”

“I want Mars.” Screamed the child and ran

towards the vigorous surge of the incoming tide without fear.

The water crashed around the child beating a pulse upon the young body.

“I am in heaven. “ thought the child.
