The 6th Anniversary of history's worst and deadly earthquake of October 8, 2005 across Azad Jammu Kashmir (AJK) is being observed today with a commitment to rebuild the affected areas. The anniversary to be observed as the day to renewed resolve for rebuilding the lives of those affected by the catastrophe, coupled with special prayers for the rest of the departed souls of the quake victims. There will be public holiday throughout the state while the day will dawn with special prayers in the mosques at Fajr for the departed souls of the earthquake victims. Fateha Khawanis offered for the martyrs and sirens will be blow at 8:52am across AJK besides observing two minutes silence. A major ceremony to observe the anniversary, will be held at Muzaffarabad, which will be attended, among others, by Prime Minister Syed Yousaf Raza Gillani, AJK President and Prime Minister as well as members of the both houses of the State legislature. Social and political workers, and civil society members will attend the ceremony. Similar ceremonies and special prayers will also be held at Athmaqam, Rawlakot, Mirpur, Kotli and Bagh. Meanwhile President and Prime Minister of Azad Jammu and Kashmir in special messages reiterated their resolve to bring smiles back to the faces of the people of AJK by completing all ongoing projects in Azad Kashmir to provide better infrastructure, facilities of health, education and livelihood to the affectees. In their separate messages on the occasion, both President and Prime Minister expressed profound gratitude to government of Pakistan, people and armed forces of the country, national and international NGOs and humanitarian organizations for showing compassion and kindness unprecedented in human history.
