Of course most Americans probaby know that it is an acronym that stands for the U.S. Republican Party. However, a majority do not know what the initials stand for.
In a 60 Minutes/Vanity Fair poll released over the weekend just 45 percent correctly answered a multiple-choice question about the meaning of the widely used acronym for the Republican Party. GOP actually stands for Grand Old Party.
Over a third thought that it stood for Government of the People. Of course some (mostly Democrats) thought it stood for Grumpy Old People. Others thought it meant God's Own Party. Only ten per cent admitted not knowing.
Republicans did better than Democrats not surprisingly but even among Republicans only 51 per cent got the right answer. Just 38 per cent of Democrats scored correctly but then 9 per cent of them opted for Grumpy Old People.
