
269 officials have been accused of gang raping a group of tribal villagers in the southern state of Tamil Nadu on June 20, 1992. The news came in light after nearly two decades when the villagers of Vachathi in Krishnagiri district were tortured and they flash their paining.
Among those convicted are 126 forest officials, 84 policemen and 5 revenue officials.
Press Trust of India reported that 100 officials were found guilty Thursday of viciously beating dozens of people from the village of dalits. The officials were also convicted of rioting, raping, assaulting and torturing tribal.
The incident occurred as official raided Vachathi village to search for smuggled sandalwood. At the same time 8 women and 100 people were found badly raped and beaten respectively. The 17 officials convicted for rape were arrested immediately. The rest were sentenced to jail terms of between one and three years.
Indian Forest Service officer K Harikrishnan is one of the four convicted IFS officers. He has been handed out the maximum punishment of 17 years jail.
The court had passed the sentences later Thursday and will issue sentences next week.
