The Freedom Writers Foundation, founded by Erin Gruwell, now features suspended English teacher Connie Heermann on it's web-site. The site, through links to other stories in Newsweek, The Guardian, The Huffington Post, L.A. Times and The Indy Channel, chronicles the harsh 18-month unpaid suspension imposed on Ms. Heermann by the Perry Township School Board, for using the Freedom Writers Diary in her classroom.
It's no secret that Erin Gruwell and the Foundation are firmly behind Connie. Ms. Gruwell testified at Connie's Board Hearing and supports Ms. Heermann's efforts to reach her "at-risk" students. Ms. Gruwell is quick to point out that Connie Heermann is the only teacher in the country to be censored and suspended for using the Freedom Writers Diary in her classroom.
Recently a WISH-TV (Channel 8, Indianapolis) report by Leslie Olsen, interviewed Ms. Heermann on her way to attend a five-day Freedom Writers Teachers Diary book and student curriculum workshop, held in Newsport Beach California, hosted by Gruwell and the Foundation. Heermann notes that support is coming in from Singapore, China, Korea, the U.K., Germany, France and Argentina. Near the end of the report, Olsen interviews the new board president Steve Maple, who acknowledges receiving "emails from around the country," (and the world) but offers no further comment. Maple also offers no comment on Heermann's continuing education -- while on an unprecedented 18-month suspension -- but takes the opportunity to complain about how the media is bias in its coverage of the board.
