Respected Newsweek Columnist Anna Quindlen

Respected Newsweek Columnist, Anna Quindlen eloquently describes the harsh treatment received by suspended high school english teacher, Connie Heermann from the Perry Township School Board. Heermann's unpaid 18-month suspension has been called "cruel and unusual" and is a harbinger of school systems today.

Quindlen chronicles a psyched, caring teacher, who gets abruptly yanked out of her classroom and asked to "resign or be fired" for using the Freedom Writers Diary book in her classroom of "at-risk" students. Heermann then takes her case before the board who seems only interested in punishing the teacher -- not looking at the mitigating circumstances, the stonewalling, the poor treatment and miscommunications she receives from her administrators.

Parents, students, teachers from around the world have written the board to protest the harsh suspension -- but the Board seems intent on maintaining its highly criticized position.
