It is not popular with the failure of the power grid. Sometimes it is noticeable only at small glimmer of light, while in the worst case can be completely dark.

Power disturbances can be caused by everything from weather to wear on the facilities.

Will reveal the capacity

Now, scientists from SINTEF in Trondheim crash test them for errors on the web. This will ensure more stability when the new facilities are built to come.

- We want to perform a direct test to determine exactly what is needed before the system fails,

How big mistakes one can have in the network, and how many errors can handle it? There are questions we want answers to.

The newcomer will increase pressure on an already stressed power grids, according to senior Gudmund Bartnes the Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Directorate (NVE).

- It will increase the investment amount in Norway, and we expect mainly investments in hydro and onshore wind power. We will thus have several small plants around that produce such power.

Simulating errors

Seljeseth in SINTEF believes this will cause the situation becomes more difficult and complex to keep track of.

- We now see that there are quite a large development of fornbybar production, and that it comes in different network levels. Therefore we will install a test rig that simulererer an error without our consumers feel it. How can we check how the plant responds to the error that occurs, he says.

- We must get these new plants to behave optimally. Also considering that in spite of everything today also occur some errors in the network.

Do crash test power grid in Norway
Scientists plan to give the Norwegian power grid a real crash test. The goal is to find out what it takes to keep the network stable - even when new plants are pressing for next year.
