Emergency Landing

Passengers evacuated an American Airlines plane by inflatable slides Tuesday after it made an emergency landing at Los Angeles International Airport an hour after taking off, a fire department official said.

Brian Humphrey of the Los Angeles Fire Department said that the pilot of Flight 30 -- which was headed to Honolulu, Hawaii, from Los Angeles -- decided to request the emergency landing after the smell of smoke was reported in the plane's cabin.

American Airlines spokesman John Hotard said the pilot requested the emergency landing only as a precaution. He said there was evidence of smoke in the cabin, but he could not say if it was visible or just an odor.
