Reports from Somalia indicate that, after heavy fighting, the transitional government took a strategic area near the border with Kenya, which was held by the Islamist militant group al-Shabaab.Government forces were able to take an area seven miles from the village of Garbo-Harey, one of the few towns that the government stays in power outside the capital, Mogadishu.Garbo-Harey is harboring tens of thousands of people who have managed to escape the famine in the Horn of Africa, but so far have not received help from the international community.
