Amanda Knox is serving 26 years for the brutal killing of British student Meredith Kercher who was found half-naked, with her throat cut open in the house the two shared in Perugia, Italy. Just a day after a lawyer launched a furious tirade against her during the appeals trial in an Italian court, a defense lawyer claimed that Knox is actually a loving young woman rather like the cartoon character Jessica Rabbit.
Giulia Bongiorno said Amanda Knox, the 24-year-old American student found guilty of killing her 21-year-old British roommate Meredith Kercher, was not a bad person. He said she was not the "femme fatale" as the prosecutors had described and compared her to Jessica Rabbit, saying she was faithful like the "Who Framed Roger Rabbit" character.
Amanda Knox was convicted of murdering Meredith Kercher and sentenced to 26 years in prison, while co-defendant Raffaele Sollecito, 26, was sentenced to 25 years.
"Knox could be compared to Jessica Rabbit," said Bongiorno, a lawyer for Sollecito. "She may appear to be a man-eater. In reality, she was a faithful woman in love." Bongiorno also paraphrased a famous line from the movie saying Knox "is not bad, she's just drawn that way."
It was reported that Amanda Knox's defense team claimed that the American student was young and vulnerable and psychologically persuaded to make false confessions and false accusations. But on Monday, prosecutors tore into Knox, accusing her of being "an explosive mix of drugs, sex and alcohol," and a master of deceit at the time of the murder.
Amanda Knox and her former boyfriend Sollecito have denied any wrongdoing and have insisted they were at his home all night when the murder took place. Initially, Knox blamed the murder on bar owner Patrick Lumumba, 39, who was arrested in a dawn raid and kept in custody for two weeks.
Knox said that she "remembered Patrick killing Meredith" and that she had stayed in the kitchen covering her "ears to drown out the screams."
In the court, Lumumba’s lawyer Carlo Pacelli said that the former Seattle college student “was a diabolical, Satantic, demonic she-devil, She was muddy on the outside and dirty on the inside. She has two souls, the clean one you see her before you and the other." He added: "She is borderline. She likes alcohol, drugs and she likes hot, wild sex."
Speaking after court, Amanda Knox's father Curt said: “Calling her a she Devil that is just wrong and when you look at humanity I just don’t believe that is the way you handle yourself. It was an all out personal attack. I’m sure it was hurtful to her but we didn’t even get a chance to speak with her.
A verdict in the appeals case is expected by next week and many are expecting Amanda Knox to be acquitted due to faulty DNA evidence.
