The British government has to pay compensation to the victims of what has become known by the name of "Bloody Sunday" in Northern Ireland.

British soldiers shot to death thirteen people during a civil rights march in 1972 in the city of Londonderry.

A public inquiry which ended last year, concluded that the deaths were unjustified and unjustifiable.

The agreement to compensate victims comes after a request from lawyers representing most of the families involved.

The Ministry of Defence in London, said he accepted that the army had acted improperly. A spokesman said the government regretted the incident.
