I look forward to a reformed UN Security Council: Obama

The American President Barack Obama addressed the UN General Assembly today.

Addressing the General Assembly, President Barack Obama said the Palestinians deserve their own state but this would only be achieved through talks with Israel and there could be no short cut.

Mr Obama is scheduled to meet both Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas.

The Palestinian President is expected to present his membership bid to the UN Security Council on Friday.

If his request is approved by Mr Ban-ki-Moon, the Security Council will then examine and vote on it. In order to pass, the request must get the votes of nine out of 15 council members, with no vetoes from the permanent members.
