Corilla

Have you seen this vegetable lately in your supermarket? Maybe you might have never encountered it neither heard about its existence. However, as many foods which are not attractive to the eye, it is one of the sweetest bitter vegetables nature has provided for mankind’s maintenance of health and healing.

In developed countries it is called bitter melon. Third world nations such as the West Indies and South America it is called cerasee or corilla. The botanical name is momordica charantia and it grows on a vine. This mysterious vegetable is not only a useful dietary supplement, but a medicine also.

As a food it can be fried dry with condiments in oil after cutting up and eaten with rice. Other forms of preparation include stuffing it whole with fish or mince and boiling in coconut milk. This preparation is most delicious. The coconut milk gravy is poured on rice and eaten also.

The benefit of eating biter melon / corilla / cerasse plant is that it has medicinal value inclusive of hormones therapy; defoliants and diabetic control. Presently, it is added as a bitters in beers. So ask for bitter melon beer the next time you go to purchase beer! Best of luck!
