Do Americans Prefer 'Brawn Over Brains' & Substance In Their Politicians?

9.8.11]---The GOP debate was Wednesday night and many analysts are saying that though Mitt Romney was more of an intellectual superior to Rick Perry, the Texas governor was the front-runner for his robust 'machismo.'

Which begs the question, do Americans prefer brawny machismo over brains and substance?

During the Republican presidential debate, Mitt and Perry dominated with a lively sparring match while Ms. Iowa Straw Poll winner, Michelle Bachmann faded into the background and was missing in action.

Now that Perry has entered the race, the buzz is around him. Why? Is it because he has a stellar record of balancing budgets, creating and maintaining jobs, is fiscally responsible yet in tune with the needs of his constituents, a pioneer on exploring new forms of energy while reigning in the big oil companies, has a model health care program for Texans?

Or is it despite accomplishing any of the above, he managed to hold the gubernatorial reins in Texas for 10 years and now looks like the aggressive cowboy leading the herd?

In fact it seems the more controversial he gets, the bigger the support. Perry has said some things that would make a fifth grader raise an eyebrow--from evolution and creation to Social Security being a Ponzi scheme. His latest machismo gesture: he called ex-VP Cheney a liar.

Before that he created quite a stir. Answering a question on how old the earth was, posed by one young constituent on a visit to Portsmouth last month, Perry answered, “You know what, I don’t have any idea--I know it's pretty old. So it goes back a long, long ways. I'm not sure anybody actually knows completely and absolutely how old the Earth is."

On the question of evolution, the governor replied,"It's a theory that is out there. It's got some gaps in it. In Texas, we teach both creationism and evolution in our public schools because I figure you're smart enough to figure out which one is right."

The day before that in New Hampshire, the Texas governor had created quite a controversial buzz when he promptly went on to discredit global warming, saying it was all manufactured by scientists who 'manipulated data,' for financial gain.

He has also accused Fed. Chair Ben Bernanke or "treason." Yet he is more popular than ever.

George W Bush was also from Texas, with that same old cowboy machismo many Americans seem to gravitate to. The kind they can sit and have a beer with. Go hunting to shoot a few moose with.

Chris Christie, Governor of New Jersey, has that take charge, hold no prisoners persona and we saw it in action when hurricane Irene was barreling into town. He was heard during a televised press conference, ordering New Jersey residents to "get the hell off the beach and go to a shelter."

Maybe it's that 'brawny' style that has many of his fellow GOP begging him to get into the presidential race. So far he has flatly refused. (I wonder what's the real story there ?)

Before he dropped out of The presidential race, poor Tim Pawlenty was the punch line on some late night comedy shows, for what many called his 'wet noodle, sans alpha male, boring lack of personality' persona. He was discounted before we even heard what he had to say.

Ronald Reagan played cowboys in Movies so I do see a pattern here. President Obama is always criticized for his 'professorial' approach. His 'too cool and detached' persona. One headline even referred to the President as a "Wimp in the White House." Ouch!

Am I on to something here?

Americans prefer candidates with balls, since the current administration appears to be lacking any. It appears that many who supported Obama in the last election have noticed that like the fairy tale Emperor, he is standing naked and hasn't a clue. The last "stimulus has left us with less jobs(note the 1.7 million more people unemployed than when the stimulus was enacted), and a much bigger deficit.

Currently it seems that what people want, is anybody other than Obama, and I'd certainly have to agree with them.

Everytime I hear that "balls" comment or statement, it tickles me pink--well maybe not pink seeing as I am a woman with some melanin! The deep irony is that that part of a man's anatomy is the most fragile 'ball' out there so I find it fascinating that it has always been used to measure a man's strength.

Moreover, talking tough does not mean you're tough. We women don't have that "fragile sac" and some of us can mentally 'bench-press' quite a few of those 'ballsy' crowd!

It's just a sexist statement anyway.

Actually, it's not a measure of strength as much as it is courage and determination; Obama is a coward. He's also a sock puppet for the Progressive side of the Democratic party... never had an original thought in his life...

When I say strength Hardy, I don't mean literally but exactly the things you mentioned here. Incidentally, has Perry had an original thought--other than executing quite a few in Texas?

I would vote for Perry over Obama. Actually, I WILL vote for anyone but Obama. I'd vote for Hillary before I'd vote for Obama.

Obama is is a bark - and definitely not a bite.

He HAS failed America - and there is plenty of proof. Because of that - liberals low blow.

Would Perry do better than Obama? Absolutely.... Jimmy Carter would too.

Then that sounds like you don't really want better you just want Obama gone..sounds personal to me..just saying...
Reply By Write4Life Maryann Scarangello | almost 2 years ago
It is personal. It should be personal for every American. Obama did not have any experience and it is now very clear. Every candidate running has more business experience than him... and that's not bias.

American voters played into a circus act last time - smoke and mirrors.

Frankly, a blind, deaf, toothless dog would do a better job than Obama... the man is the original "zero".

I would bet that many liberals agree with you and because of this, they will defend that blind, deaf and toothless dog regardless of how low that defense will take them.

Welcome to Main Stream Media bias.

Main street bias---if you live in glass house, you should definitely not throw stones---cause you sound like a classic case of blatant bias yourself.

Princess,

I do not think it is necessarily brawn over brain, I think it is remembering Brawny paper towels (lol) strong.

What is needed is brains combined with what appears at least to be brawn. Last night Obama got the message and yes for want of a better phrase appeared to have balls and what a reaction he is getting today..

I have said he needs Rick Perry's fire who is confident and brawny even in his ignorance..

I also know that most Americans prefer to vote against their interests until they have a problem. I guess it is a misunderstanding of the political system and liking anything that seems to glitter even with a lack of substance.

I remember 2008 when elitist was the hate phrase. To be educated and living the good life seems to be an issue for many Americans so that is why they seem to choose one of their own level for fear perhaps of thinking outside the box.

We all love the bad boy or a little bad girl in us as nice boys and nice girls usually finish last.

I am always amazed how some Americans ignore the fact that the Congress is who determines what gets done and the Congress is now at 18 % in popularity so why is Obama only to blame this seems to be ignorance 101.

Anyway girlfriend give me brains & brawn like my hon and I am a happy girl.

Rated up.

Stay safe in one of my fav cities this weekend and remember all those who lost their lives that terrible September 11 2001 morning.

Thanks--I will! We over here in the land of the free and the brave like to whine 'aplenty!' But when it comes to putting people with brains and acumen in office they put people like Georgie for 8 years and now they love Perry, who is another Georgie on steroids!
