Sri Lanka counts more elephants than had been estimated

Sri Lanka announced that a national survey of the number of elephants revealed that the population of elephants was higher than expected.

The census, conducted last month in forests and parks, 580 elephants found that previous estimates.

An environmental official said the results showed that endangered species were experiencing a healthy growth in the number of its population.

In August, groups of Sri Lanka consrvacionistas withdrew their support for the survey because of fears it was used to capture some animals.

Sources said they had no such intentions.
