A Puerto Rican legislators this week introduced a proposal to place on the island of Desecheo small , west of Puerto Rico, the majestic statue, which is twice the size of the Statue of Liberty without its pedestal. In response, a spokeswoman for the creator of the work have said that almost got permission to assemble the statue on the north coast of Puerto Rico, as originally intended.
But Saturday was a new proposal: the mayor of San Juan, Jorge Santini, revealed that it could consider the possibility of placing it somewhere in the capital. "Everything depends on conditions," he said, estimating that will be placed in San Juan if the project isviable and attractive to the city and the economy.
Santini suggested three locations: an old landfill near a busy highway and a wealthy neighborhood in Lake County, or near a bridge, within the zone which houses the international airport.
The statue of 126 meters weighs 600 metric tons , and is joining as a trial in the western port of Mayagüez. It shows the sailor at the helm of a ship in miniature, with three candles behind him . It was created by Russian sculptor Zurab Tsereteli to commemorate the fifth centenary of the first arrival of Columbus to America in 1492.
But the statue has been erected without a place to for nearly two decades . Several U.S. cities including New York, Miami and Baltimore , have refused to accept it for reasons ranging from cost to look. Some people say that the arms are too long , thevery small head and the pose of Columbus with a raised hand it does seem silly.
The creation, called Birth of a New World , is a complementary work in Seville . That other statue depicts Columbus standing inside an egg and is titled Birth of a New Man.
Tsereteli's works have frequently caused controversy for his epic and full of dramatic images.
Puerto Rico accepted the colossal statue as a gift in 1998 , and used $ 2.4 million in public funds to bring it after a former mayor could be considered an attraction for a suburb of San Juan. But some officials felt they could block the paths of aircraft , and several residents protested against plans to demolish houses to place the work.
