A news report says assumed communist rebels have killed 11 policemen in an ambush in eastern India.
The Press Trust of India news agency quoted senior police official Ram Nivas as saying that the rebel attack took place Friday in Bijapur district of troubled Chhattisgarh state.
The police officer could not be instantly reached on the phone. No additional information was instantly accessible.
The area is a stronghold of Maoist rebels who are demanding land and jobs for the poor & often target government forces.
Motivated by Chinese revolutionary leader, the rebels have fought the government for more than 4 decades in some Indian states. They have tapped into anger among the countryside poor over being left out of the country's economic gains.
