Juan Hugo Smith, South African 30 year old captain has been ruled out of the 2011 Rugby World Cup due to achilles tendon injury. The flanker incurred the injury while playing for the Cheetahs during the Vodacom Super Rugby match in February this year.

"This is a huge blow for me, the Rugby World Cup is the pinnacle of any player's career and i was looking forward to our attempt to become the first team to win the title in successive tournaments" he said.

On the other hand, Springbok's head coach Pieter De Villiers indicated that Juan is a very good player and that loosing a player like him is not a good thing for the team. He is yet to find the replacement for the captaincy in less than 20 days befor the tournament in New Zealand on the 9 September 2011.
